MEET THE PHOTOGRAPHER
With MTP Guest Editor Sally M. Harris
This week’s cover photo is F6F Signaled to Takeoff by our oldest member Richard (Dick) Hazelton.
Dick Hazelton is known for his humorous images. At OPCC share nights, he listens. ”I know I’ve succeeded when I hear a few chuckles. Also, for the record, Valerie Henschel hasn’t aged a day since I joined OPCC in 1993,” he quipped.
Eighty-one years ago, at age 16, Dick won a prize at a local drugstore and purchased a Kodak twin lens reflex camera. Back in 1924, his sister‘s box camera ignited his interest in photography, and for his high school graduation, he received an Argus A-35mm. He knew then he wanted to be a photographer.
Dick had read about an Air Force photography school, but they weren’t accepting applicants. But he had another plan.
He inquired at the local Navy recruiting office in Springfield, OH and was told that his chances of getting into the photography program were “nil.” Being a “glass half full” kind of guy, he joined anyway. He aced the comprehension test, and was granted entry to the Naval Photographic School in Pensacola, FL. After school, he spent three months on a ship in the Pacific.
In May, 1944 he was transferred to the fleet carrier USS Yorktown CV-10 in Pearl Harbor. Film taken from aircraft was processed in the on-board photo lab. The USS Yorktown was in the first battle of the Pacific, and Dick’s battle photo appeared in the Washington Post. Much later, he and the Photographic Officer printed film from the sinking of the battleship Yamato near Okinawa.
Photographer’s Mate 2/c Dick Hazelton photographed on both the captain’s and admiral’s bridges. His photos included Henry R. Luce, founder/editor of TIME Magazine and Admiral Arthur W. Radford, who later became the chief of Eisenhower‘s Joint Chiefs of Staff. Dick was in the Navy for three years and aboard the USS Yorktown when the war ended on Sept. 2nd, 1945.
After the war, Dick began a career as a chemical engineer, and describes himself as knowing the technology of photography. “I realized I wasn’t an artistic photographer early on, yet I still try,” he says.
Dick’s served OPCC in every position except treasurer and refreshments, co-chaired OPCC’s annual museum shows and wrote the club’s newsletter. He says the club is a great place to learn photography and meet people. He highly advises participating in field trips and exploring special subject assignments.
Dick shoots a variety of subjects with his Nikon D-5500, and processes his images using Lightroom and Photoshop.
From war photography to humorous photography, from box cameras to digital, Dick Hazelton knows how to roll with change and be of service in every decade of life. It was an honor to interview him and hear American history first-hand.

Field Trip Reports
Ruby Beach Astrophotography - Thursday, August 12
The forecast looked perfect for landscape astrophotography…until the wildfire smoke rolled in. Fortunately, a small but determined group of three photographers led by Dan McKenna persisted and headed to Ruby Beach with the objective of photographing the Milky Way and Perseid meteor shower. Dan reports that conditions were much less smoky at Ruby Beach than in Sequim, and that some good Milky Way images were created.
Abstract Port Townsend - Sunday, August 15
Fifteen OPCC members took advantage of the cooler weather to shoot abstract images of the painted walls and geometric structures of the Kinzie Bunker at Fort Worden. The group also wished OPCC Membership Chair Peggy McClure a very happy birthday. The group continued on to the Boat Haven Marina for additional abstract photo opps. The trip concluded with an optional stop at Marrowstone Vineyards. It was a fun and relaxed day for photography and comaraderie. This field trip was organized by Bruce Fryxell and Lori Moilanen. Hopefully we’ll see some of the photos shared in the September Member Share Night meeting, which has a special theme of “Abstract Photography”.
All participants in theses field trips are invited to share 1 -2 photos from each field trip. Use the file sizing and naming conventions for Member Share Night (Click HERE for instructions) and email the images to opcc4fieldtrips@gmail.com.
Remember, OPCC Field Trip Chair Sandy Woods is looking for more field trip ideas and leaders. Email Sandy at fieldtrips4opcc@gmail.com if you’d like to suggest a field idea or to volunteer to lead an outing.

Join us for a guest presentation by Sharon Tenenbaum. Tenenbaum is a civil engineer, educator, and internationally acclaimed fine art photographer from British Columbia, Canada. She was trained as an engineer in Israel and practiced in Vancouver, BC. In late 2007 she left her engineering career to pursue photography fulltime, after being inspired by street photography experiences during a life-changing journey to Southeast Asia.
Drawing on her original background as a civil engineer, Tenenbaum’s passion for photography covers a wide gamut of subject matter. She is especially interested in Fine Art Architectural Photography -- a perfect marriage of her engineering and artistic sides. Her body of work ranges from sharp black and white photography to colorful, hand-painted multi-media images.
Tenenbaum has won numerous fine art international awards, most recently in the Architecture Category of the 2020 Tokyo International Foto Awards. Her work has been displayed in public spaces and published in several magazines, including National Geographic.
As a photographer, Tenenbaum is a self-taught artist, having learned her craft through personal research and practical experience behind the camera. Her work often incorporates long exposure techniques to expand the expressive dimensions of her art. Although an artist at heart, Tenenbaum enjoys teaching and sharing her photography techniques and vision with others. She teaches photography workshops around the world, photography courses at Langara College in Vancouver, BC, and a variety of photography and postprocessing classes online. To view her art, accomplishments, and educational offerings, click HERE to visit her website.
