NEWS

OPCC Portfolio Workshop Announced - Orientation Meeting Scheduled for October 27.

This year OPCC has been fortunate to have multiple workshops/classes organized by our members, including the Long Exposure Workshop taught by OPCC Member Share Night Chair/OPCC Print Chair Dan McKenna and the Adobe Lightroom Classic Class taught by OPCC Competition Chair Peggy McClure.

Our final workshop of the year will be the OPCC Portfolio Development Workshop. This workshop is based on the recently published book The Photographer’s Portfolio Development Workshop: Learn to think in themes, find your passion, develop depth, and edit tightly by renowned landscape photographer William Neill.

As defined by William Neill, a portfolio is a group of photographs with a consistent theme and  of consistent quality. Based on his long experience as a photographer and a teacher. he believes that creating portfolios benefits photographers by teaching them to focus and critically evaluate their work.

The goal of this OPCC workshop will be to have fun exploring William Neill’s portfolio development process as a group, with each participant developing a curated web portfolio on a theme of their own choosing. The resulting portfolios will be displayed on the OPCC website at the conclusion of the workshop. Please note: You must participate in the workshop to have a personal portfolio displayed on the website.

Neill’s book is based on a course that he offers online. A bonus of participating in the club workshop is that OPCC Vice President Marian Bodart has recently taken the online version of this workshop from William Neill himself and will share her insights from that direct experience during the OPCC workshop.

Information is now available on the OPCC Portfolio Development Workshop webpage. Click HERE to view the webpage. Click HERE to access a printable version of the course outline.

Registration will be via an email survey sent to all OPCC members during the week of October 17. The workshop is open to members of all skill levels who have a library of photographs to work with. Contact Lori Moilanen (opcc4mail@gmail.com) if you do not receive the registration email.

An orientation meeting will be held for workshop participants on Thursday October 27 at 7:00 PM via Zoom.

Attend the Northwest Council of Camera Clubs (NWCCC) 2022 Fall Conference on November 12

By OPCC NWCCC Representative Stephen Shoff

I would encourage OPCC members to register for the upcoming Northwest Council of Camera Clubs (NWCCC) annual conference and attend the in-person events to be held on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2022 at the Brightwater Center in Woodenville, WA.  Even if you choose not to attend the in-person events, the conference registration includes a week of virtual classes that will be presented Sunday-Thursday, Nov. 13-17 that you could find educational.  I haven't seen the schedule for the online presentations yet but they will be recorded and available online through March 31, 2023.

Click on the conference poster to view an enlarged version.

The afternoon events include:

  • 2 Keynote addresses by Kristi Odom, internationally acclaimed Photographer, Nikon Ambassador, Follow of the International League of Conservation Photographers, and motivational speaker

  • Open Print Salon display

  • Awards presentations for the Open Print Salon, Open Digital Salon and Digital Slideshow competitions

Unnamed sources also tell me that the conference is supported by Seattle-area camera retailers who send representatives to the conference.  Opportunities for door prizes and and a chance to talk to actual camera and photographic equipment dealers are possible!

Personally, I'll be looking forward to attending the Saturday afternoon events.  Of special interest to me will be viewing the Open Print Salon entries that will be displayed.  Dan McKenna tells me that he assisted at least 4 OPCC members in submitting images for this competition, the awards for which will be presented during the afternoon events.  In-person attendance will even provide opportunity to participate in the People's Choice award for the print competition.  I have no doubt that there are additional OPCC member submissions for the Open Digital Salon competition.  Some of you might be interested in seeing the Digital Slideshow Competition, particularly those OPCC members that are looking to apply what they learn from the upcoming OPCC Portfolio Development Workshop.

Here’s the link for more info on the Conference and to sign up:  https://nwcameraclubs.org  Cost is $60.

It has been a long 2 years of dissociation from people locally and our normal interactions with the outside world.  OPCC has been active in the NWCCC activities and competitions for longer than the 5 years I've been with the club.  I believe that in the past, OPCC participated in NWCCC's Traveling Image Salon, a year-long club-level [rather than individual] print competition.  One of our own former club officers, Rebecca Hanson, is on the NWCCC board.  In April of last year, a number of our past and current club officers contributed significantly to an NWCCC networking workshop [https://nwcameraclubs.org/club-resources/].

This conference provides us, as OPCC members, an opportunity to reconnect and expand our horizons in the regional photographic community.  I look forward to seeing a number of you there.

Please contact me if anyone wants to arrange ride-sharing:
