Dungeness River - The Convergence - Bob Selby

This newsletter is currently published twice monthly on Sunday evenings in advance of our first and third Thursday meetings. The deadline for new submissions for the next newsletter is Friday October 30.

MEET THE PHOTOGRAPHER

With Sally M. Harris

Like the title of Bob Selby’s cover image, there was a point of convergence of photography and art in his own life. Bob began shooting with a Nikon F film camera in high school, and then was led into the art world in an unexpected way in college. When he was a student at UCI, he worked for three years as a slide projectionist in the art department.

“The professor was a history of art teacher, and he made art come alive,” Bob said. That experience influenced the years to follow, as he learned to incorporate art into his photography.

His cover photo illustrates the union of photography and art. It was taken in the late spring on the upper Dungeness River, using a medium zoom, tripod and a slow shutter. It was originally processed in On1 Raw, then enhanced with Corel Painter and finally edited with Topaz Studio 2.

Bob joined OPCC seven years ago. Recently, he taught a four-part Zoom class on Topaz Studio 2, and followed up with a study group. He’s a retired web designer, and worked for AT&T and later started his own company. He was an advisor in the early development of the OPCC website.

He uses a Canon 5D and a Fuji XT4 for his photography. He primarily shoots landscapes with an eye toward what he might achieve using his painting programs.  With the painting program, he can add, remove and embellish his photos. He’s currently making the transition from a photographer to a digital artist.

Ansel Adams is Bob’s inspiration, as well as many Olympic Peaks Camera Club members: Jonas Benjamins, Peggy Hanson, Susan White, Tim O’Neill, Lewis Bennett, Barbara Lippert, Ardythe Wendt, Jim Arnold, and Colleen Bittner. He’s inspired by their compositions, technical knowledge, and willingness to share techniques and skills.

He was a longtime friend of Jonas Benjamins, who passed away earlier this year. Jonas would often phone him and say, “I feel like going somewhere to photograph!” Bob would find a great place, and they would shoot together, capturing the moments.

Bob is a world traveler, and has photographed in more than 35 countries. His favorite place is New Zealand.

He says, “It’s exquisite, because you can stretch out on a hundred mile sandy beach on the north part of the north island, and watch penguins on the south part of the south island.”

New Field Trip! An Autumnal Walk Along the Morse Creek Trestle Trail

Ellen Bogenschutz will lead a field trip for fall color photography on Saturday October 23 from 4:30 to 6:30 PM. On this walk along the Morse Creek Trestle section of the Olympic Discovery Trail (ODT), we’ll take photos of fall color, the creek bed under the trestle bridge, the canopy of large leaf maples along the trail to the Port Angeles Harbor shore line and then maybe catch a sunset at the beach.

Details

Meet in the gravel parking lot (ODT Morse Creek Trestle trailhead) on Strait View Drive off US-101 near the old log cabin.

  • Current weather forecast: 54 F, Mostly clear, partly cloudy (good for the sunset!)

  • High Tide: 3:41 PM (for spray against the rocks)

  • Sunset: 6:09 PM

Be Prepared

  • Dress warm

  • Wear very comfortable shoes. The path is pretty straight and level, but it's a trek out to the waterfront (Ellen estimates about 4 miles round trip for those who go all the way to the water).

  • Bring a headlamp or flashlight for the walk back to the parking lot if you are staying for sunset photos

  • Tripod for sunset photos

For more information, contact Ellen at 208-930-2649 or ebogenschutzphotos@gmail.com.

THE BASICS - Tips for Learning New Photography Skills

The Exposure Triangle

The “Exposure Triangle” is an analogy frequently used to describe the interrelationship among your camera’s aperture, shutter speed, and sensitivity (ISO) when determining the proper exposure for an image. One example is shown below, with explanatory text available by clicking HERE. An online search for “Exposure Triangle” will bring up other options.
