MEET THE PHOTOGRAPHER

With Sally M. Harris

The cover image is “Windy” by Tess Agesson, reminiscent of days long ago when her parents took all 13 kids beachcombing during storms. The outings were treasure hunts, where they found glass balls from Japan and other interesting items.

Tess joined OPCC in September 2021 to learn about manual camera settings and techniques to enhance post processing. She continually attends OPCC classes and particularly appreciates the mentorship of Marian Bodart. Her aim is to expand her skills, especially with night photography. Tess likes to convert her high contrast photos to black and white, and recently started editing her photos to tell a story.

Tess’s interest in photography began with the joy of photographing her sons and taking photos at family gatherings.  Later, she purchased a Nikon D5000 to experiment with landscapes, bird photography and buildings.

“I like taking photos of unusual buildings and angles, as my original desire was to become an architect.  My subjects are usually abstract or patterned. Wildlife and nature photos are my favorites, typically because they remind me of hiking in the woods or a time where I was able to reach out to nature,” said Tess.

Tess developed her appreciation for nature while growing up in Port Angeles. She admires the work of Ansel Adams, and enjoys finding the views he displayed in his photos. As a child, she was inspired by the color and spice of the images in the National Geographic Magazine.

Tess enjoys traveling and finding wildlife in their natural elements, especially in the National Parks. In the last three years, she has traveled across the United States three times. Her former job as an international sales manager gave her the opportunity to take photos while traveling the world.

Tess looks forward to her upcoming position as OPCC treasurer (effective 2022).

“I have years of experience in finance, as financial director in Sacramento of a Fortune 100 company and banking manager. I retired as Acting Financial Director of the City of Port Angeles,” said Tess.  “I look forward to the friendships and fun as a member of OPCC.”

THE BASICS - Tips for Learning New Photography Skills

A Closer Look at Aperture and Shutter Speed

A previous issue of In Focus addressed the “Exposure Triangle”, an analogy frequently used to describe the interrelationship among aperture, shutter speed, and sensitivity (ISO) when determining the proper exposure for an image. For a closer look at the elements of aperture and shutter speed visit the Apalapse YouTube channel for useful video tutorials (see “Camera Basics - Aperture” and Camera Basics - Shutter Speed) by clicking HERE.

LOOK AND LISTEN

Here are some indoor and/or armchair photography-related activities for those damp Fall days when you just don’t feel like putting on the rain gear.

Georgia O’Keefe - The Photographer

A new exhibit at the The Museum of Fine Arts Houston and a companion book, both titled “Georgia O’Keefe - Photographer”, are providing new information on O’Keefe’s interest in and use of photography as an element of her artistic process. Here’s an overview from the book publisher (Yale University Press):

“A groundbreaking introduction to the photographic work of an iconic modern artist”

”The pathbreaking artist Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986) is revered for her iconic paintings of flowers, skyscrapers, animal skulls, and Southwestern landscapes. Her photographic work, however, has not been explored in depth until now. After the death of her husband, the photographer Alfred Stieglitz, in 1946, photography indeed became an important part of O’Keeffe’s artistic production. She trained alongside the photographer Todd Webb, revisiting subjects that she had painted years before—landforms of the Southwest, the black door in her courtyard, the road outside her window, and flowers. O’Keeffe’s carefully composed photographs are not studies of detail or decisive moments; rather, they focus on the arrangement of forms.

This is the first major investigation of O’Keeffe’s photography and traces the artist’s thirty-year exploration of the medium, including a complete catalogue of her photographic work. Essays by leading scholars address O’Keeffe’s photographic approach and style and situate photography within the artist’s overall practice…”
