Dates: Two Saturdays, February 10th and February 17th
Time: 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. PST
How: 2-hour sessions via Zoom. This is an interactive course in which participants will be encouraged to participate via CHAT and/or by asking questions. Dr. Cook will also direct questions towards the participants and discuss their responses.
Cost: Free to all OPCC members - Sessions will be recorded and will be available for viewing on the OPCC website.
Why Attend: If you complete both days of the workshop, you will come away with the skills to score and critique your own and others’ images.
Course Description: It starts with an intense study of what it takes to make an excellent image as well as why an image may not score highly. It is basically a concentrated course in Composition.
At end of the session one participants will receive images to analyze on their own, according to the attributes discussed in the presentation. At the beginning of session two a summary report of the participants analyses will be provided.
Session two covers the formal process of scoring and critiquing images. Dr. Cook will present a format designed by her that includes helpful wording to describe strengths and areas needing improvement as seen from the viewpoint of the judge. Included in the presentation will be a discussion of OPCCs’ scoring guidelines used by the judges for the External Evaluation Nights.
Course Outline
Topics Session One:
Judging Criteria - the purpose and importance of criteria that are often used to score and critique images, with some attention paid to different type of images.
Attributes of High-Quality Images - include Impact, Technical Excellence, Composition and Originality/Creativity.
Homework: Each participant will critique images provided by Dr. Cook using the attributes of high-quality images as a guide. The critiques will be due back by Tuesday evening following the completion of Session one. Dr. Cook will summarize the group’s performance and review during Session two.
Topics Session Two:
Critiquing Images - will include a format for feedback, language to use and language to avoid, and matching the score to the review.
Scoring Images - using the OPCCclub’s scoring guidelines to analyze and score images.
Optional Homework - Each participant who has completed both sessions will be able to score and critique up to 4 images of their choice. which they will choose. The images and critique may then be submitted to Dr. Cook for feedback. There is a fee of $25 (to be paid by the participant) when you submit your images.
